Econ 323-031 Reading Report & Presentation
Pre-Session 2014
Summary:
Each student will be required to write a paper that is at least two pages (double-spaced, 12 point font, 1in. margins, or more than 500 words) and do a presentation to the class that is at least 3 minutes (max of 5 minutes) on a recent news article or academic paper involves sports and economics. For a news article (ESPN.com, Yahoo sports, WSJ sports section) which needs to have been written within the past year, you need to provide a summary of the article, how economics plays a role in regards to the subject, and your evaluation of the article including any concepts or ideas the writer missed. For an academic paper (for good choices see the footnotes of your text or ask me) discuss the question being answered or central innovation of the paper, why the question is important, how they try to answer the question, the results of their research. This project will be worth 10% of your course grade. Students are expected to submit their article choice before 1:00pm Tuesday May 27th, in order to ensure students don’t write on the same topic, the first person to choose a particular topic will be allowed to present on it, others will have to pick a new topic and have it approved.
Note: Students presenting Tuesday May 27th should email me before the due date to ensure they are all presenting unique topics.

Do not plagiarize for this project in any way! Including material in your write up that is not cited will be taken as plagiarism and is an academic integrity violation. If you want to use excerpts from your source material, cite them (doesn’t have to be perfect), and it won’t count towards your page total.

Paper (15 total points):
The paper is due on the Thursday of the week you present. The paper should be emailed to me by 1:00pm on the day of class. The format must be a word doc or PDF. Here is the grading for the paper:

Topic (3 pts):
– Did you meet the deadline for the topic being approved?
– Did you get any changes or updates approved by me?
Content (8 pts):
– Did the paper meet the length requirement?
– Did the paper provide an adequate review or summary of the material?
– Did the paper provide an adequate evaluation of the material or results and how did economics played a role?
Writing Evaluation (4 points):
– Was the paper well organized?
– Were there excessive grammar, spelling, or citation errors?
Presentation (15 total points):
Presentations will begin Tuesday May 27th and should be completed by Thursday June 5th. There will be 5 student presentations each class period. The presentation should not last more than 5 minutes and should be a minimum of 3 minutes. I will provide guidance during the presentation regarding timing.
When you do the presentation imagine you’re teaching a (very) short lecture to people not familiar with your topic. Since this is only a 3-5 minute presentation I do not expect slides, although you are welcome to use them. Here is the grading for the presentation:

Material (5 pts):
– Did the presenter provide adequate information regarding their topic?
– Did the presentation meet the length requirements?
Presentation Evaluation (10 pts):
– Was the presentation well organized?
– Did the presenter adequately engage the audience (eye contact, etc.)?
– Did the presenter attend the presentations of their peers?
