Assignment: Write a 4 page analytical paper based on assigned books and independent research. Use specific examples to support your argument, and cite the quotes and information you use with footnotes to indicate where you found your evidence.

Your paper should contain the elements of a good analytical paper, including clear and grammatical writing, correct spelling, and a clearly-worded statement (ideally at the start of the paper) that contains your argument. Be sure to develop your argument consistently throughout your paper. Chicago style is the most appropriate for this paper.

You will be expected to address the topic analytically and provide a clear thesis that you support clearly and consistently throughout your paper.

Be sure to use proper standard margins. Your paper must be type written and should be formatted in double-space, and should use the Times New Roman (or comparable) font in 12 point.

In your paper, discuss the following question:

Machiavelli argues for the centralization of authority around a single figure who works on behalf of the state’s interests without regard to religious morality or specific economic interest. How do his ideas on governance compare to the increasingly powerful absolutist governments that emerged in 16th and 17th century Europe, particularly in Spain, France, Italy, and Britain.

In order to answer this, you will need to use the books The Prince, World History Vol.1, as well as World Documents Vol. 1 as well as at least one outside text, (articles, books, primary sources etc…)

In formulating your critique, it is not necessary to examine each of these governments, but to determine what chief elements were crucial in creating a successful government according to Machiavelli. Did leaders like Elizabeth I, Ferdinand and Isabella in Spain operate according to his principles or in opposition to them? Examine the governments being created in these two centuries and argue whether these government ally with Machiavelli or do they run counter to it. You may find elements of Machiavelli’s ideas, but not all are found in these governments. (Look especially at someone like Henry VIII who centralized the power of the church and government around himself entirely.)

It is important to understand the development of the concept of absolute monarchy and the growing debate that emerged in the 17th century over its legitimacy. It is also useful to examine the philosopher of men like Hobbes who was greatly influenced by Machiavelli.
