Listening Assignment for Preparatory Term
What is the listening assignment?
You will have to produce a short report based on a Western Culture lecture. This is called an Active Listening Task.
What are the stages of the task?
There are three main stages:
Pre-lecture You will have to read an article before the lecture and select relevant vocabulary from that article.
Lecture You will take notes during a 20-minute lecture.
Post-lecture You will produce a short report.
What will I have to include in this report?
There are three sections in the report which will be evaluated:
1. Lecture Preparation
a) Reading You should write a short paragraph which outlines the key concepts discussed in the reading and provide a full reference for that source.
b) Vocabulary You must provide a record of 10 words which you feel are relevant to the lecture topic and provide information about each word which will help you to use them in the future (e.g. definitions, collocations, word families, usage, etc.)
2. Summary
You must write a short summary (about 250 words) of the lecture based on the notes you take during the lecture.
3. Lecture Follow-Up
a) Links You should briefly explain how the lecture links to the reading you did before the lecture (and, if relevant, how it links to other lectures/readings).
b) Questions You should write 3 follow-up questions which you might want
You must also include a) the reading with your notes on it and b) the notes you took during the lecture.
What help will I get in preparing this assignment?
You will be given guidance on this task in the EAP Listening class and the EAP Skills class. You will also hand in a first draft and receive feedback on this which will help you improve your assignment.
What is the timeline for this assignment?
Here are the key dates for the Active Listening Task:
4th November Reading posted on Moodle
15th November Western Culture lecture for task
29th November Hand-in date for first draft
6th December First draft returned with feedback
13th December Final hand-in
How will this assignment be evaluated?
Three main aspects are evaluated:
Vocabulary (20%) Is the vocabulary useful? Is the information regarding the vocabulary complete and correct? Is the vocabulary recorded in a useful way?
Summary (40%) Are the main points and supporting ideas included and distinguished? Does the summary show that you understand the lecture?
Reading/Questions/Links (40%) Is your preparation useful? Have you made relevant links between the reading and the lecture? Are your questions relevant and specific?

Does this count towards my final EAP grade?
NO! This is a formative assignment, which means that it is practice to help you develop your skills. Please do not get too stressed about this assignment! It does NOT count towards your final grade.
