Lifecycle Working Bibliography (25-points)
Project/Purpose: To develop specific research skills. To learn how to find evidenced based, nutrition related research
articles efficiently and effectively based on certain criteria.
Objectives:
Understand what NHANES is and how it relates and contributes to nutrition research.
Understand what a peer-reviewed reference and journal is.
Understand what “original research” means and how these articles differ from other articles in peer-reviewed journals
(summaries, reviews, commentaries, etc).
Correctly cite in a chosen and professional citation format (APA).
1. Choose one of the nutrients or foods listed below:
Iodine * Fruit and vegetable consumption
Iron * Thiamine
Folate * Vitamin B12
Fluoride * Essential fatty acids
Vitamin D * Protein
Vitamin C * Fiber
Dairy or Milk * Sugar (added)
Calcium * Sodium
Note: If you want to use another nutrient, then you must receive permission from the instructor of the course. Please e-mail instructor with your idea and what you want to do for consideration and possible approval.
2. Find one (1) peer reviewed, original-research article for each lifecycle phase and pertaining to the
nutrient/food/nutrition related issue chosen above. NHANES data must be referenced in 5:9 references in your
bibliography.
Preconception
Nutrition During Pregnancy
Nutrition and Lactation
Infant Nutrition
Toddler Nutrition
Childhood Nutrition and/or Preadolescent Nutrition
Adolescent Nutrition
Adult Nutrition
Older Adult Nutrition
Hint: You will find a lot of good articles and references if you utilize NHANES in your literature search and/or start on
the NHANES home page (http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/nhanes.htm)
3. Compile a bibliography/reference page using APA format.
Use the references provided via Blackboard for correct APA format and citations, and how to determine if from a
reliable, peer-reviewed journal.
References must have been published within the last 5-years
References must be a research article, from a reliable peer-reviewed journal
* Not an editorial, not a summary, not a commentary, not a discussion, etc.
Title of article must clearly indicate lifecycle phase and nutrition issue that the research article is about.
Original copies of the articles must be turned into my department mailbox on the due date. Do not hand them to
me in class. Do not e-mail them. Do not attach them to your TurnItIn submission.
4. Bibliographies must be turned in via the TurnItIn link provided before or on the due date.
All research articles referenced within the bibliography must be scanned into one (1) pdf document – one pdf
document per article. You will be turning in 9-PDF documents to this link. Articles must be organized in the
same order that they are in the bibliography.
The PDF copy of the articles must be submitted via the link provided – Assignments link in Blackboard.
Failure to submit copies of the articles referenced by the due date will result in an automatic -5-point deduction.
