Project description
Part 1
This week’s CONTENT discussion board asks you to explore the uses of power by the nation’s former President and the realignment of civil-military relations, executive-legislative relations, and executive-judicial relations in the wake of the terror attacks of September 11, 2001. Based on the points you discerned in your viewing of the National Geographic video (http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/george-w-bush-the-9-11-interview/), write a primary posting of 100-125 words identifying 2 of the bases of power from French and Raven used by President Bush and those he worked closely with in the administration to influence the decision-making process and outcomes following the attacks of 9.11.01, and why you believe those particular uses of power were/were not problematic for the President and the nation. For full credit, your posting should clearly identify a base of power (legitimate, reward, coercive, expert, referent) and provide a succinct working definition of it, then describe an instance per base of power you identify that demonstrates Bush et al’s use of that resource – being clear in your explanation of HOW the instance reflects the definition – and finally drawing your conclusions about the implications of their actions. Remember there is no right or wrong answer. Be clear and succinct in your explanation and use of key terms.
Part 2
On your own, complete “Self Assessment 5-2 Views of Power” (see the attachment). The self- assessment helps you understand your relationship with the deployment and use of power in decision-making, resource allocation and superior-subordinate relations. Total your scores for the give bases of power (Legitimate, Reward, Coercive, Referent, Expert) as the starting point for your Discussion. For this discussion, write 150 words or so in which you identify your strongest point of agreement and strongest point of disagreement with power use, write about an event which you believe shaped your beliefs and attitudes toward each of the particular types of power which you scored highest and lowest on and finally the extent you are surprised by or achieved an expected evaluation in the power survey. For this later portion, reflect briefly on your reading and how your initial understandings may have been consonant with or diverge from your scoring of the situations.
