Second page/ Second section – an explanation of your topic. Title this section whatever your issue/topic/research is – for example, if you are researching the long term effects of spending 5 or more years in prison, then that is what your title would be.This section should be anywhere from 3 to 8 pages in length. This is where you are explaining what your topic is about, giving background info about it, perhaps defining terms, things like that. This is not a literature review..this is only an explanation. So for example, if you are doing your research project on “what is life like in juvenile hall”. Then this section of the project would give background info on the juvenile justice system. When did we start to have juvenile facilities, why did we, what is the philosophy of the juvenile justice system things like that.
3rd Section- this is your literature review. Title this section Literature Review. Your literature review should be anywhere from 5-10 pages in length. Your literature review is a compilation of at least 3 scholarly articles about your topic/issue/research. This is where you are comparing each of the articles with one another. A literature review is not a review of your research about your topic, it is a review of the minimum 3 pieces of research that you are going to find regarding your topic. If you cannot find any research about your topic, then pick another topic. You cannot do a lit review without having someone else’s research to review. The most common way to compile your data for a lit review is to read through your scholarly articles. Look for common themes in all of the articles. So if we are researching juveniles, then probably each piece of research might refer to data regarding male versus female juveniles, gang related crime and juveniles, juveniles who are 14 and older, or under 14 years of age, divorced families and the impact of juveniles and crime, a degree of religiousity (meaning how religious is the juvenile or their family). Or perhaps the scholarly articles reference video games, owning guns, being abused, etc.
So, as you know, a lit review takes all of the important data contained in at least 3 scholarly articles and you are going to synthesize them into one document. A great way to start your literature review is for your first paragraph to explain what you are researching, where you found your data, what you hope your research will reveal, etc.
Your second paragraph could start out taking a look at those common topics. So, lets say your first scholarly article talks about juvenile delinquency and abuse. But the other two articles do not. Then under the sub heading of abuse, you might summarize that the one article believes abuse is responsible for juvenile delinquency and why, but the other scholarly articles do not reference abuse, etc, etc, etc. And you do this for the topics/issues and that discussed in the scholarly articles. Now, feel free to make some assumptions about the scholarly articles, there is nothing wrong with that, but just make sure you can back up your assumption with an explanation.
4thSection – the last page is your bibliography and this should only be 1 page. I do not care if you use MLA formatting, or APA, or ASA, or whatever. But please do use some literary formatting.
You shall not use wikipedia as your source of a scholarly article. You must use at least 3 scholarly articles. You may not cut and paste from sources, if what you use in your project is not your voice, then make sure you give credit to where it is you found it and who wrote it. If your project is cut and pasted, copied, etc, you will get zero points.
