1. Discuss the major differences in the narratives in the women’s suffrage movement in the film One Woman, One Vote and Angela Davis’ Women, Race and Class. Explain the racial conflicts in the women’s suffrage movement, how they affected the movement, whom the conflict excluded and who was appeased by segregation in the movement. Why was the right to vote so important to black women? Explain why the right to vote was so important to working class white women. Why did middle class white women want the right to vote? Discuss who educated, middle class white women didn’t want to vote and why.
2.Describe the way that black women were socially constructed during the slavery era in the United States as depicted in Women, Race and Class. How were white women constructed? Describe the social location of both. Describe the ways that black women experienced oppression. Describe the ways that white women experienced oppression. Explain the distinct and different roles that black women and white women had during this era. Describe the new femininity and how it defined women’s roles.
