Identify the independent variable

Identify the independent variable

This assignment is designed to give you practice choosing the appropriate test statistic and calculating that test statistic using SPSS. You will get practice running ANOVA (studies 1 & 2) and correlation & regression (study 3). You will need to run the proper analysis to test each hypothesis, answer the questions, copy your output under each question, and write a conclusion in APA format.
Open the SPSS data set called goggles.sav.

Study 1: A psychologist was interested in the effects of alcohol on mate selection at night-clubs. Her rationale was that after alcohol had been consumed, subjective perceptions of physical attractiveness would become more inaccurate (the well-known) “beer-goggles effect”. She was also interested in whether this effect is different for men and women, and if BAC is correlated with the attractiveness score of a chatting partner. She picked 48 students: 24 male and 24 female. She then took groups of 8 participants to a night-club and gave them no alcohol (placebo drinks or alcohol-free lager), 2 pints of beer, or 4 pints of beer. At the end of the evening she took a photograph of the person that the participant was chatting up. She then got a pool of independent raters to access the attractiveness of the person in each photograph (out of 100).
First, let`s explore if there is a significant difference in attractiveness scores based on the amount of beer consumed. Test the hypothesis using the data provided.
a. Proper test statistic:
b. Identify the independent variable:
c. Identify the dependent variable:
d. State null and alternative hypotheses:

e. Perform the proper ANOVA using SPSS and copy and paste the output into this file RIGHT BELOW this question. Make sure to select a post-hoc test (Tukey), and under Options, select Descriptives,Homogeneity Tests, and means plot.

f. On the ANOVA table, circle the MSwithin and MSbetweenand put them into an F ratio as if you were calculating it by hand.
g. Is there a difference in attractiveness scores of night-club visitors chosen by the participants who consumed different amounts of beer? If yes, which levels are different from each other based on the post hocs?
h. Write a sentence or 2 below describing the results of the statistical test using APA style. Include any differences seen in the post hocs.

Study 2: You would like to see if attractiveness scores are affected by the gender of the participant, amount of alcohol consumed, or an interaction between the two variables. Use the data provided to test this hypothesis.
a. Proper test statistic:
b. Identify the independent variable:
c. Identify the dependent variable:

d. State the 3 sets of Hypotheses:

Perform the proper ANOVA using SPSS and copy the outputinto this file RIGHT BELOW this question. Make sure to select Descriptives and Homogeneity Tests under Options. Under Plots, transfer gender to the horizontal axis, alcohol consumption to separate lines, and add that plot to the analyses.
e. On the ANOVA table, circle the 4 relevant MS values (one for each main effect, one for the interaction, and one for the error term) and put them into F ratios as if you were calculating your 3 F ratios by hand.
f. In this type of analysis, if you have a significant interaction, you should focus on that. Is your interaction significant? Does this match up with what you see in the plot?

g. Write a few sentences describing the results of the statistical test using APA style.

Study 3: You are interested in seeing if a person’s attractiveness rating/score is correlated with BAC. Run a correlational analysis to test this hypothesisand copy the output into this file RIGHT BELOW this question. Create a scatter plot with the best fit line

a. Are the scores correlated (include the statistics–r and p values for the correlation)?
b. Does your answer in part Asurprise you? Yes, as I wouldn’t have thought there would be a correlation between math and writing.

c. Write a few sentences describing the results of the statistical test in APA style.
d. Run a simple regression to test to see if you can predict someone’s BAC based on attractiveness of a stranger they are chatting to at a night-club. Copy the output into this file RIGHT BELOW this question.
