Homelessness and the Mentally Ill
Ethical Issues

Although for the purposes of this course you are only conducting secondary research, you are likely to conduct primary research in the future, for your dissertation or future work within the field of human services. As a result, it is important to be aware of ethical issues that might arise in primary research. Professional associations such as the National Association of Social Workers have their own code of ethics/conduct that addresses guidelines for conducting research. These guidelines usually address ethical issues such as client privacy.

In addition, the Walden University Institutional Review Board (IRB) ensures that research meets Walden’s ethical standards as well as U.S. federal regulations. This includes addressing ethical issues, such as informed consent with special consideration for the participation of children and prisoners.

To prepare for this Discussion, think about two ethical issues that may arise in conducting primary research in human services. One issue should address the ethical codes/conduct of a professional association in your area of interest, and one issue should address Walden’s IRB guidelines.

With these thoughts in mind:

Give a brief description of two ethical issues that may arise in conducting primary research in human services. Then explain how you might apply one professional ethical guideline/code and one IRB guideline to prevent and/or address these ethical issues. Be specific, and reference the guidelines or codes.

Support your Discussion assignment with specific references to all resources used in its preparation. You are asked to provide a reference list for all resources, including those in the Learning Resources for this course.
