Students post:

“Since my first day in geometry class I have always seen myself as being good in the field of mathematics, even if I never really understood why. I just sort of figured that I had “a gift” as people put it. However, after a few hours of skimming the web, I’m not sure that my mathematical skills can be classified as “a gift”.

According to Neuropsychologist Brian Butterworth, everything we exceed in is due to hard work and perseverance (Joyce, 2001). This is called “the hard work theory” (Joyce, 2001). The hard work theory states that people (like me) exceed at math (or any other subject) not because we were born with it but because we work hard at it (Joyce, 2001). I could not agree more with this statement!

I did not get to where I am today without countless hours of math homework and numerous hours of one on one help with my teachers. No, I was not born with mathematical skills. I believe that I simply had more of an interest in math than most people my age did. This interest in math is what made my math skills so advanced. If you are interested in something, you are more apt to learn and become good at that something.

In conclusion, I do not believe we are born with math. Instead I believe that we are born with an interest in math and the rest depends on our hard work! What does everyone else think?
