Extra Credit Performance Response Information

The Performance Response is a basic type of fieldwork project in which you will learn more about a particular musical culture through close visual observation and listening. You may complete two Performance Responses for extra credit this semester. Each response is worth up to 100 points and 2.5% of your semester grade.
To earn full credit on these optional responses, you should
1.   Choose a performance from the List of Suggested Performances.
2.   Take the performance form to the performance you’ve chosen to attend.
3.   Pick up a program if one is available. This may help you know how many pieces, songs, or movements you will hear during the performance.
4.   Take notes. Use only your observations (what you see and hear); do not use any other source. This is not a group project. You must complete the assignment on your own. If you use information from another source (i.e., Wikipedia or other Internet site, program notes, friend’s assignments), you will earn 0 points on the assignment and will be reported to the Office of Dean of Students for plagiarism.
5.   After the performance, go to our Blackboard course page and download this form. Save it as a Word file and rename it as <your last name_first name_performance.” For example, if I attended Trio Voce on February 12, I would save it: Hund_Jen_ Trio Voce.
6.   Type your responses to the questions directly into the renamed form. Do not write an essay. Simply answer the questions in a thorough and descriptive way.
7.   The number of points for each question is clearly labeled. Notice that factual information is worth fewer points that descriptions of what you hear and see.
8.   ****IMPORTANT DEADLINE INFORMATION ****: You have 48 hours after the start time of the performance to submit this Performance Response Form on Blackboard. If you attend a performance on April 24 or April 25, you must submit your response form by April 25, 11:55 p.m.
a.   Once you have completed your Performance Response Form and saved it to your computer, log onto our Blackboard page, and click on “Performance Response.” Then, click on “Submit Your Completed Response Forms Here.”
b.   Click the name of the performance you attended and for which you have completed a form.
9.   On the “Preview Upload Assignment” page, copy your document and paste it into the submission window. If you’d like, you may also upload a file of your document, although it isn’t required. To do so, click “Browse My Computer” and upload your saved filed. (See #5 above to make sure your file is correctly named).
a.   The window to upload each performance automatically closes 48 hours after the start of the performance. For example, if I attend Trio Voce on February 12 at 7:30 p.m., I must submit my response before 7:30 p.m. on February 14 to receive credit for the assignment. If I submit the assignment at 7:31 p.m. on February 14, I will earn 0 points. If I submit a partially completed form by 7:30 p.m. on February 14, I receive partial credit.
10.   The Extra Credit Performance Response is worth 100 points (worth 2.5% of the semester grade).

6.   Where are you located in the space? Did you stand? Did you sit? (2)
7.   Describe the design and decoration of the space. Be specific. Look around and give a vivid description of what you see with the assumption that your reader has never been to this location. (10)
8.   Why do you think the concert organizers chose this space for the performance? (6)

Description of Musical Style (30 points; 8 points for each piece, 6 points for #10)
9.   Choose three pieces/movements from the performance – you must write about the first and last piece, and then choose one other from the middle of the performance. For each piece, give a detailed description of the musical style as you listen to it using terms from class, including tempo, dynamics, melody, rhythm, and so on. In other words, you will provide a running commentary of what you are hearing. If you use information from another source (i.e., Wikipedia or other Internet site, program notes, friend’s assignments), you will earn 0 points on the assignment and will be reported to the Office of Dean of Students for plagiarism.

12.   How did the musicians interact with the audience during the performance? Give specific examples from the performance to clarify your answer. (If you performed, be sure to give an example of how you interacted with the audience.) (6)
13.   How did the audience interact with the performers during the performance? Give specific examples from the performance to clarify your answer. (If you were in the audience, be sure to give an example of how you interacted with the performers.) (6)
14.   Do you think the type of interaction between musicians and between musicians and audience was appropriate? How did you know it was or wasn’t appropriate? (6)

Reflection on Your Observations (20 points):
