An explanatory synthesis is a written discussion that draws on two or more sources (Behrens and Rosen 94). For this assignment, you will write an explanatory synthesis explaining how the theme obedience to authority has been treated in popular culture. For this assignment, popular culture includes drama, short stories, poetry, songs, and movies. Notice TV is NOT included. Don’t use TV programs. You may use one movie so that you can include the movie over which you wrote your summary/critique. That obviously means you only need to find two other sources. 1. Total length must be between 1,000-1,200 words.
2. Must have at least 3 sources.
3. All three sources can’t be the same. Your sources can’t all be short stories, or all be novels. You must have three different types of fiction in your paper.
4. Must contain in-text citations in MLA format.
5. Must have a works cited page in MLA format.
6. Must follow the organizational pattern from the book or from the UA handout.
7. Use correct MLA format for the paper and include the word count as the last thing on the last page of the synthesis. People aren’t doing this, and it’s going to become worth more points.
8. Must have an identifiable thesis statement correctly placed as the last statement of the introduction.
9. Must have a conclusion that that does not repeat exactly what you’ve already said in the same words, but summarizes your paper and leaves the reader thinking.
