Evaluate Objectives and Methods of a Study Part 1 & 2
An overview explaining the expected outcomes with an assigned article to read and lessons with uploaded lecture slides and transcripts to review and look over. I have also uploaded the two (2) parts to this assignment in word documents with full detailed instructions and requirements. There is a article piece that goes with these two parts that is uploaded as well. Again, you will find everything you need uploaded in word documents and PDF forms.

Overview and Lessons
Overview
In this Module, you will be introduced to mixed-methods and single-subject research designs. These two designs integrate many of the research principles covered to this point, and both are widely used in educational research.
Mixed-methods designs have the potential to answer distinct research questions that neither quantitative or qualitative designs alone can address, although how the two methods are implemented will determine if a “distinct” research question is actually addressed.
Single-subject designs provide a powerful method for conducting experimental research with only one individual, setting, or behavior.
Expected Outcomes
By the end of this module, you should be able to do the following:
Distinguish among the four major components of mixed-methods designs (MMD)
Apply the four major components to the six types of MMD presented in Table 8 of Creswell et al. (2003)
Describe the theoretical roots and the assumptions about behavior in single-subject designs
Explain “steady state” and “baseline logic” of single-subject designs
Differentiate between the three major types of single-subject designs reviewed
Assigned Reading
In addition to this material, you should complete the following reading:
Creswell, J., Clark, V., Gutmann, M., & Hanson, W. (2003) Advanced Mixed Methods Research Designs, pp. 209-240. In A. Tashakkori & C. Teddle (Eds.), Handbook of Mixed Methods in Social and Behavioral Research. London: Sage – uploaded*
Evaluate Objectives and Methods of a Study Part 1
Instructions
Now that you have evaluated the following article using the concepts we have covered during the past few modules:
Agirdag, O., Van Avermaet, P., Van Houtte, M. (2013). School segregatation and math achievement: A mixed-methods study on the role of self-fulfilling prophecies. Teachers College Record, 115, 1-50. – uploaded*
On this page, you will answer the following questions about this study:
What is the primary purpose of the study?
What are the study’s two objectives?
What is the student sample size and the mean and standard deviation for Math Achievement?
Is the student-reported “Sense of Futility” (academic futility) measure reliable?
Given the reliability, is it possible for the student-reported “Sense of Futility” measure to be valid?
Is the teacher-reported “Teachability Expectations” measure reliable?
Given the reliability, is it possible for the teacher-reported “Teachability Expectations” measure to be valid?
From Table 2 in the article, what is the correlation between Futility Culture and Teachability Culture? Is it statistically significant?
What best describes the phase of quantitative and qualitative data collection?
Which method was given priority in research design?
Which first-cycle coding methods were used?
Which second-cycle coding methods were used?
Guidelines
Review and use the School Segregation and Math Achievement article to answer the 12 questions above.
Answer the questions in full sentence(s) form.
Evaluate Objectives and Methods of a Study Part 2
Instructions
Now that you have evaluated the following article using the concepts covered during the past few modules:
Agirdag, O., Van Avermaet, P., Van Houtte, M. (2013). School segregatation and math achievement: A mixed-methods study on the role of self-fulfilling prophecies. Teachers College Record, 115, 1-50. – uploaded*
For this assignment, create a Word document that contains and answers the following three components:
Summarize and interpret the findings for objective 1 of the study.
Describe the methods used by the authors for maintaining the qualitative reliability (e.g., cross-checks) as well as the external (e.g., think description) and internal (e.g., triangulation) validity of the data. Provide a rational for your answers in one to four sentences.
Given the roles of the qualitative methods in the study, what unique or essential piece of information (if any) did they contribute to the findings? Stated differently, if the study omitted the qualitative methods, would their omission have weakened the findings? Why or why not?
Guidelines
Create a Word document that addresses the three questions listed in the assignment instructions.
Answer the 3 questions in complete detailed paragraphs.
