Select any four video documentaries we have seen in this class and explain how the content in these documentaries illustrates, expands on, or otherwise throws light on the specific concepts, theories and perspectives we have learned about in our class (i.e. from your lectures and readings). In other words, explain how the documentaries relate to the material in this course – be specific and give examples! Use the readings and lectures from this course and figure out how they apply to the documentaries.

Here are some questions to help guide/organize your discussion and analysis.

What was the purpose of the documentary? How did the documentary enhance your understanding of disasters and the analysis of disasters? What insights did you gain? How did it change your previously held view of disasters? In what ways did (or did not) the documentary develop a social and/or political critique as a contribution or instrument of social change? What implications did such a critique have for the analysis of disasters and disaster management?

Format

You are to write one essay that covers the four documentaries, perhaps even compares the four of them. The idea is to encourage reflection, integration, and synthesis of the material covered in our course. Do not write four separate reviews. But, having said that make sure to give at least a brief summary of the title and content of each of the documentaries you are covering (no more than 3 to 4 lines for this).
Give a general introduction to the overall analysis you will be presenting in this assignment – a paragraph is fine.
In your body, discuss the documentary films in terms of the course material and address the questions given above.
At the end of your submission, give a summary of the most important points you have raised in your analyses and give some concluding remarks.
Give a list of references for material cited.
Four to six pages double spaced spaces (not including the bibliography, so you can have as many pages of bibliography as you need), 1-inch margins, 12-pt font, with cover sheet indicating name, student number, title and course (this cover page does not count in the page count).
Evaluation will be based on depth and sophistication of analysis, level of thought and care that went into the assignment, insights gained, as well as proper grammar, spelling and sentence structure.
