In parts of the country, especially in the South East of England, access to affordable housing remains the single most important housing issue. In an attempt to combat

the growing backlog of current and future housing demand, the UK Government is targeting two million new homes by 2016, plus an additional one million new homes by

2020.

In addition to that, the construction industry in the UK is also set for a boost of up to £150 million over the next five years in an attempt to reduce construction

times and improve quality.
The increase need of housing no doubt will also have an impact on the environment.

With this in mind, the question is on: How to deliver a quick, cost effective and sustainable residential building at the same time?
Choose a current residential project in the UK – preferably in South East England (this can be new build or refurbishment project) – must be approved by Jennie

APPENDIX – MODULE BPG (EBB-6-010-1415) RESEARCH PROJECT ASSIGNMENT GUIDE

LONDONSOUTHBANKUNIVERSITY
DEPARTMENT OF TH EBUILT ENVIRONMENT
BSC Construction Management
BSc:    Commercial Management
BSc:  Property Management
BSc:    Architectural Technology

Tasks
1.    Undertake a critical appraisal of the research question that you selected. This should involve at least five references from journals and/or high quality

reports.
2.    Explain the methodology that you used to answer the research question.
3.    Undertake an evaluation of the pros and cons OR barriers and drivers, or whatever the question is requiring you to do, on the case study that you selected.

THIS TASK MAY BE SUPPORTED WHERE POSSIBLE WITH AN INTERVIEW WITH THE RELEVANT PERSON WHO IS OR WAS INVOLVED IN THE CASE/PROJECT (BUT NOT COMPULSARY).

4.    Establish a link between what was reviewed in the literature and what you found out in the case study that you selected.

NOTE TO STUDENTS: YOU WILL BE PROVIDED WITH FIVE EXAMPLES OF TRYPICAL RESEARCH PROJECTS AND YOU NEED TO FOLLOW THE FORMAT AS A GUIDE.

HOWEVER, THE FORMAT MIGHT NOT BE ENTIRELY APPROPRIATE TO ALL SUBJECTS. FOR EXAMPLE,   LAW TOPICS IS NOT A QUANTITATIVE SCIENCE, SO, THE FORMAT MAY BE MODIFIED

DEPENDING ON THE SUBJECT AREA. IN THIS CASE, STUDENTS CAN REFER TO THE LAW TUTOR FOR ADVICE ABOUT THIS.

Written report and presentation
Your assignment should be written up in the form of an academic report and must be fully referenced using the Harvard system. This report should be 5000 – 6000 words

(excluding the reference list and the appendix). Your report should be structured as follows:
1.    The selected research Question (Theme followed by a question) ………………..

2.    Background literature review.             (1000 – 1300 words)

The literature review is an essential part of your research project. It involves reading and appraising what other people have written about your selected topic. It

can be both descriptive and analytical. It is descriptive in that it describes the work of previous writers and it is analytical in that it critically analyses the

contribution of others with the view of identifying similarities and contradictions made by previous writers.

Although for this research project you will not be expected to read everything that has been written, you will however need to show that you have read a certain amount

of relevant literature and have some awareness of the current state of knowledge on the subject. It is therefore essential that students learn how to find the most

relevant published materials quickly.

3.    Outline methodology.                    (500 – 700  words)

This should explain the method that you used to obtain the data/information necessary for the case study i.e. what type of information did you gather from the case,

how did you link the research question that you selected with case etc.

4.    Results                             (3000 – 3500 words)

In this section of the coursework, there should be evidence of information, data, ideas and arguments that support the discussion. All the material used and the

discussion that is developed should be organised and written in a structured, logical and clear manner. There should be evidence of the student’s ability to identify

and evaluate issues from the case. This is the most important part of the research project for assessment and at 40% of the marks will be awarded for this section.

5.    Conclusions and recommendations                (500 words)

The concluding section should draw together the strands of the arguments and
evidence that were presented in the previous sections. Here, the research question should be discussed and findings of the research should be set out and an evaluation

of these findings should be made. A set of recommendations should also be made.

6.    Presentation

Your research project should be neatly presented with headings formally structured and references should be cited correctly. It should be word-processed and a 5000 –

6000 words long.

A word count should be provided; diagrams, tables, reference list and appendices are not included in the word count.

While the presentation needs to be good, the quality of the content of the dissertation is the most important issue for the marker. The presentation is worth 10% of

the marks.

7.    References

8.    Appendices

Assessment – The assessment of your research project will be based upon the following marking scheme:

Background literature review and referencing (1000 – 1300 words)        30%

(Has a rationale for the research question been established? Is a clear aim been stated? Has a background to the topic been included? Does the material appear to come

from a variety of sources, demonstrating a range of research? Has similarities and/or contradictions among previous writers clearly identified? Are the references

properly incorporated into the text? Is the reference list set out in an appropriate way?)

Clarity of methodology used to answer
the Research Question                    (500 – 700 words)        10%

(Has the approach to obtaining the relevant information from the case been set out? Has a key research questions been clearly identified? Has a secondary or a primary

data collection format (such as shown in the examples) been designed for your case study? Has detail of the case been clearly but concisely described?

Results                             (3000 – 3500 words)    40%

(Is the material relevant? Has the assignment brief been fully addressed? Is the result presented in a logical way with well-reasoned arguments and a coherent

arrangement? Has additional material such as charts, tables &/or diagrams etc been provided to reinforce the text where appropriate? Are such charts properly cross-

referenced in to the text? Has the case study been fully analysed and not just extracts from the case? Has the research question been fully evaluated with evidence?

Has the evidence been well presented and linked with literature review?)

Conclusion and recommendation                (500 words)        10%

(Does the research project reach a sensible conclusion that takes into account all aspects of the topic? Does the conclusion summarise the main findings from the

research? Does the conclusion answer the research question? Is it an original conclusion? Is the conclusion substantiated? Has an original recommendation been

provided?)

Presentation                                        10%

(Is the document neatly presented, word-processed & with a title sheet, page numbering, paragraph headings, 1½ line spacing etc? Does it have a logical structure like

shown in the examples? Is the test free of any grammatical/spelling/typographical errors?)

Total                                            100%
