DISCOURSE ANALYSIS OF SINCLAIR AND COUTLHARD
Based on what your analyses reveal, to what extent is Walsh correct in saying that the learning environment in contemporary classrooms is characterised by greater equality and partnership? In what ways do the two interactions reflect and differ from the sorts of interactions Sinclair and Coulthard reported? Illustrate your answer by referring to relevant features in your analyses.
3. To what extent is Walsh correct in stating that the Sinclair-Coulthard model is inadequate for dealing with situations which are not marked by clearly expressed power relations? Illustrate your answer with reference to features you have found in one of both of your analyses.
Question 1 Discourse Analysis: Sinclair-Coulthard model
In his book Investigating Classroom Discourse, Walsh claims that:
One of the main limitations of the Sinclair Coulthard system is that it was derived from data recorded in ?˜traditional?? primary school classrooms during the 1960s that demonstrated clear status and power relations between teacher and learners. In the contemporary […] classroom, where there is, arguably, far more equality and partnership in the teaching-learning process, it is doubtful whether the framework could adequately describe the structure of classroom communication.
(Walsh, 2006: 47)
1. Carry out an analysis of both the above interactions using the Sinclair-Coulthard model of Discourse Analysis. Present your analyses clearly and fully.
