The four elements I chose for the heraldic shield are, a sheep as my animal weed as my plant, red as my color and Scientiaest lux lucisasthe Latin Motto.
The reason why I chose a sheep is because in the Chinese tradition is very important for the young and strong to be filial towards the elders. For the Chinese, sheep is recognized as a filial animal. The main reason is because when mama sheep feeds milk, the baby sheep drinks on his knees. The Chinese ancestors consider this action as a way to show grace and gratitude from the baby sheep. When sheep parents get old and are not able to walk anymore, the little sheep will stand on his knees again, yet, this time to feed milk to the parents. Since very little, I was taught to learn how to be grateful to my parents from the actions of the sheep.
Weed means, indomitable, strong vitality. I chose weed because I still remember the lesson I learned from my Saturday’s Chinese professor. He was teaching me about a Chinese poem about weed. It said, “For each year it (weed) withered, one more year of honor, endless burning wildfire, spring breeze blows and it grows again” The explanations of the phrase means, it is a honor for the weed to wither, since, not every plant lives as long. For example, orchids need special care, while weed grow anywhere and are hard to get rid off. Fire can burn a place, however, weed will grow again after he spring breeze, while other plants of flower need treatment. Weed can even grow in gaps on the street or floor; they represent a strong will power. My Chinese professor taught me to always compare myself with weed instead of a rose. He said that one must live with a strong willpower because life is difficult.
Red is the color of fire and blood. It is related with courage, energy, strength, power, determination as well as passion, desire and love. It is a very visible color use to represent, for example, stop signs or firemen. Courage is a value must people are taught. One is always tell to be energetic and strong, to take risks and to try new things in order to learn more. Parents spec their kids to resemble the color red, because they want their kids to highlight inside a group and to represent the family.
Scientiaest lux lucis means in Latin “knowledge is enlightenment”. This believed to have been said by Leonardo da Vinci. This phrase is the motto of Vermont State College University, also the motto of a publishing house in United Kingdom. My dad always encourages me to study hard, if not to study hard at least to learn as much as I can, through readings, news or travels. In Chinese we have a phrase that says “To walk or travel a millions miles is better than reading a million books” He says that working hard is important, but knowledge is very important as well. For example, to run a company money is very important. However, knowledge is his way to make employers obey voluntarily. Sometimes money and punishments cannot make people obey; therefore one should use knowledge to convince others. I had a little experience back in Panama during my last year of high school. On a common Friday I was helping my parents in the grocery store. Some Jewish customers were always cold, they barely smiled at me, in addition, we never had a conversation besides a “Hi”, “Thanks” and “See you next time”. However, after they knew I was coming to study they ask me my name and introduced themselves. Others congratulated me for not following the traditional Chinese Panamanian girl that would follow an arrange married by their parents. I felt happy at that moment, even though, I did not chose coming here but my parents. I am grateful to have parents that can provide me this expensive opportunity to learn more.
The four elements I chose for the heraldic shield, together they describe the person I want to become.

o The shield must have a minimum of four components: Include at least one animal, at least one plant or tree, at least one color and a Latin Motto. This will involve some personal reflection and some research.
o This shield must be actually drawn out, photoshopped or cut and pasted together. You may use any material you please: leather, wood, paper, fabric or steel. There must be a physically created shield, not a virtual shield that exists only online.
o Take your time, reflect on your character and represent who you are to the best of your ability. Do NOT just scribble something out on a piece of lined notebook paper!
o Give a detailed and thorough explanation of each of your choices of symbols. One paragraph for each symbol is my suggestion.
o Take a photo of your shield and include it in your essay. You will lose points for pictures that are too large to see properly. No attachments will be graded!
o Cite your sources
o Essay needs to be just long enough to adequately explain your symbols, at least one paragraph for each symbol, color and motto.
