Software Review:

Review Figure 2-6, page 33 of Ponniah 2nd. Ed., or Figure 4-3, page 135 of Kimball, 2nd. ed.

Select one column from one of the components (data staging (ETL), data storage or information delivery (BI)) mentioned in Chapter 2 of Ponniah.

Search the Internet for companies that have software tools that can be used to support the processes and activities for the column that you selected.

Select two tools, and provide a review and comparison of the functionality and capability of the two tools.

Write a report (Maximum of 8 pages) evaluating and comparing the two tools.

Conclude your report with a recommendation of which is the best tool and why you make that recommendation.

In a data warehousing project, this activity would be part of the preliminary exploration of potential tools for the data warehouse environment.  This activity does not require hands on

experience with the tool.  It is just a first level screening to select tools that will go to the next level for further evaluation.

Also, be aware that the vendor’s web site is a sales tool and what you read is part of their sales and marketing strategy.  You are trying to do a preliminary technical screening to determine

whether to spend more time on a particular vendor.

When you are quoting material from a vendor, then document those quotes.  However, do not quote marketing material and jargon.  You may use articles and white papers as source material, in

addition to the tool web site, as part of your review, comparison, evaluation, and recommendation.

Document all of the sources used in your paper.

Magazine articles
