Data Communication and Network
Aim:
To analyse the Data communication and networking requirement of a large organisation.
20% marks in this case study are for carrying out an analysis, undertaking necessary research and writing a report. 15% marks are for the presentation of this work in class. Presentations will be held in the week starting 8th June 2015. A presentation schedule including guidelines and expectations will be emailed to the students one week before the presentation date.
Learning outcome assessed:
1 Evaluate the use and function of a selection of data communication hardware.
2 Evaluate a selection of network configurations, apply planning and design issues.
3 Analyse and evaluate a selection of data communication services
Notes:
This is an individual assignment and must be the product of your own work. Students are reminded to read pages related to assessment rules including rules for dishonest work in the Waiariki student guide and diary.
A hard copy of the report must be submitted by due date into the assignment drop box (BITA faculty reception) and have the standard assignment cover sheet attached. An electronic version of the report must be either uploaded on e-campus or emailed to the tutor by due date.
ASSISTANCE TO OTHER STUDENTS
Students themselves can be excellent resources to assist the learning of fellow students, but there are issues that arise in assessments relating to the type and amount of assistance given by students. It is important to distinguish between what types of assistance are beneficial to another’s learning and also what types of assistance are unacceptable in an assessment. Both are outlined below.
Beneficial Assistance
• Study groups.
• Discussions.
• Sharing reading material.
Unacceptable Assistance
• Working together on one copy of the assessment and submitting it as your own work.
• Giving another student your work.
• Copying someone else’s work.
• Changing or correcting another student’s work.
• Copying from books, the Internet etc. and submitting it as your own work.
Overview
For the following case study, identify the major communications related issues and recommend a solution with reasons, stating any assumptions you might make. Your recommendations should be written as a report. A report format is given below in this document.
Case Study
ADTECH Software Ltd is a leading software development company having its head office at Wellington and sub offices at Auckland and Christchurch. The head office in Wellington is based in the city centre in a multi-storey building on three floors. The Auckland office is also spread on two floors of a multi-storey building in the city centre. The Christchurch office is housed in an apartment building in Avondale suburb on a single floor.
As part of its revised IT strategy, the company wishes to establish WAN links between each of its offices at Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch. It also wants to upgrade the existing LANs and backbone network.
The Wellington office of the company also wants to give wireless connectivity in the board room and staff room for around 50 mobile users. These rooms already have walled socket to the wired network. It is expected that you will provide the best possible bandwidth and security to these wireless clients.
ADTECH major customer base is spread in different cities throughout New Zealand. The normal traffic between Wellington and Christchurch is usually 2Mbps. The traffic between Auckland and Christchurch is usually 1Mbps but it might burst up to 2Mbps during the peak load. The normal traffic between Wellington and Auckland is usually 10Mbps. The reliability of the WAN links is important for the Company. The details of the workstations at each of the offices are as follows:
Site Number Remarks
of
work-
stations
Wellington 225 within office bandwidth required = 100Mbps to
1Gbps
Auckland 200 within office bandwidth required =10Mbps to
100Mbps
Christchurch 50 within office bandwidth required = 100Mbps
Instructions
You have been hired as an expert to carry out the requirement analysis and make necessary recommendations. Your recommendations should cover the following areas:
• Any assumptions taken
• Topology
• Connection media
• Subnets
• IP addressing scheme
• Servers
• Protocols (Transport/Network/Routing Protocols)
• Backbone technology
• Equipment required in creating the LAN & WAN
• Equipment required in creating wireless LAN and Backbone Network
• Wireless LAN security
You have to produce a network diagram clearly showing the equipment required and the technology adopted.
Your recommendation should be written as a report covering the above said areas. The project report must be professionally prepared with one and a half spacing, font size 11. The network diagrams must be produced using computer packages like Microsoft Visio. APA-6 references must be provided for any material taken from Internet or books or any other source. The report must therefore include a list of references. It is expected that the project report size will be approximately 8-10 pages (minimum), although there is no limit on the maximum size of the report. Your report should have the following format:
• Table of contents
• Summary
• Introduction
• Technical details (including, bandwidth, product details, link details etc.) and discussions (analysis why? how? comparisons, other options etc.)
• Network diagrams
