Critical summaries
1.What is a critical summary?
A critical summary must include the following:?
1.Summarise: What is the argument being made in the selected reading? This section should be written as described below.
a) ?a. What central issue does the author address? Or, put another way, why has the author written this piece? (one sentence)
b) ?b. What overall argument does the author make? (one sentence)?
c) c. What specific arguments does the author make? (three to five bullet points)? d. What evidence is used to underpin each of these arguments? (a brief summary for each bullet point from c, above; page references are necessary here).
Note: In some cases you may find it helpful to draw a diagram of the argument ? showing the relationship between evidence, specific arguments, and overall argument.
2. Evaluate: Critically assess the research methods employed and the explanation given in the reading. This section should be written as a discursive paragraph(s). The issues below are suggested as relevant, but need not all be addressed in each summary (given word length constraints).
a. What method(s) does the author use to examine the topic?
b. What are the advantages of using these methods for this topic?
c. What limitations or biases do these methods produce in the context of this ?study?
d. What alternative methods could have been used?
e. How well does the author?s evidence support the argument made?
f. How adequately does the author deal with alternative explanations?
g. How does this reading relate to other readings (from this module or from other ?modules)?
h. Are there additional criticisms that you have?
ESSENTIAL: You are expected to provide page references for all of the arguments/points you make in your critical summaries, as well as for any quotes that you use.
