Critical Analysis of a Film

Critical Analysis of a Film
Use your skills of visual and rhetorical analysis to examine and analyze a film. The film must deal with a political issue; however, the term “political” could be broadly interpreted. As we’ve seen throughout the semester, the personal and the political often overlap. The political can be found in a wide range of topics worldwide, including: Social Problems (poverty, child welfare, prison reform, drug laws, etc.), Environmental, Cultural, & Economic Issues, etc.
(Check out the list at the end of this handout for more specific examples.)

Engage with the vocabulary visual analysis.

Your essay should contain analysis of at least one visual element, preferably a still-shot of the film. Think about mise ‘en scene when you make your analysis. Why is the
director/cinematographer making the choice to frame a shot in a certain way?

Use at least 3 outside sources and cite them in your text by using MLA citation methods.
(Use the OWL at Purdue online resource for information on citations.)

Use sources appropriate for your topic. The more scholarly, the better. Check out the library resources available to you. (We will also cover these in class.)

Mere summary is not considered analysis and will not be accepted as a valid attempt at completing this assignment.

Use synthesis in your writing. Demonstrate your ideas in conversation with the film, and in conversation with your sources.
