What role does assessment play in the teaching and learning of Mathematics?
This essay must demonstrate an understanding of the different kinds of assessments that are relevant to teaching mathematics, like formative and summative assessments; explore the connections between teaching practice, theories and policies. Consider different related class approaches and current national picture. Think about purposes of assessment, perspectives from different stakeholders, (i.e. Pupils, parents, schools, government) and the problems and tensions that assessments generate. Examine assessment on the wide ranging term, including (but not limited to) practices such as AfL, standardised examinations (e.g. GCSEs), the use of mini white boards, probing questions, diagnostic questions, self-assessment, peer-assessment, verbal and written feedback (e.g. marking) and online assessment tools (e.g. mymaths).
