comparing two or three media articles
Paper instructions:
1. Write a paper comparing two or three media articles that discuss the same event. How are the articles different? What does each author hope to accomplish by presenting the information in a particular way? Submit a copy of all articles (or include an active link to each article).
2. Compare two persuasive political speeches to determine which one is more effective. Consider the goal(s) of the speaker and the outcome of the speech. You must break at least two arguments from each speech into standard form as you analyze the speeches. Submit a copy of both speeches with your paper (or include an active link to each speech).
3. In class, we have talked about the need for adapting one’s tone and style depending on the audience and the purpose of communication. Write a paper analyzing three different pieces of your own writing. Each example should clearly show how you shifted your tone and style to meet the needs of that particular kind of communication. As support, you will need to include several direct quotations from your own paper in addition to quotations from outside sources about rhetoric and communication.
4. Write an essay connecting Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” to a contemporary example. This could be a social or political issue, a book, or even a film. You might, for example, discuss how the film The Matrix reflects ideas similar to those that Plato presents in the text. You will need direct quotations from the “Allegory of the Cave” as well specific examples to illustrate how the chosen subject of your comparison relates to Plato’s text.
