Write a 3-4 page paper analyzing ONE pair of works.
In your comparison discuss:
Style: is the work linear or painterly in style/ treatment?
Color: local color (accurate) or interpretive, expressive exaggerated color
Subject matter: what is the overall character of the subject matter, what is shown?
Composition: how is the overall scene organized
Overall effect, mood
The next step in the analysis is to discuss these differences: why has the artist chosen to use the overall visual form ? how do these
differences contribute or communicate the artist’s “world” view or overall emotional statement about his/her subject. You don’t need to
research that (it would be the next step in the process of analysis) but for this first part of the process, in one or two concluding
statements, conjecture on the reasons for the differences in the work. Why each artist captured, expressed a particular expression
about the content.
Comparing two or more art works is usually the most rewarding way of writing about art. The process enables you to discover new
perceptions and ideas with which to better or more deeply understand the art works. A comparative analysis focuses on corresponding
formal elements, ideas, and concepts in individual art works, in the oeuvre of artists, in artistic periods or across several artistic
periods. You are observing correlation and contrasts between works of art. The basic work steps of any comparative analysis are
continuity and change. While observing the art works more closely, you want to focus on what is alike and what is unlike; on what is
similar and what is dissimilar.
