Chinese Pipa

Chinese Pipa
This is the Chines Pipa. This video is longer than most, but is under 10 minutes. It is very similar to the guitar and some other Eastern stringed instruments. This artist uses many fingers in the right hand – known in western guitar playing as “finger style”. You may think that this instrument sounds similar to the banjo. This artist also uses tremelo picking similar to a spanish style like Carlos Santana would do. He also plays the pipa like a percussion instrument (drum) sometimes. Please write a brief explanation of your impression of the pipa and this video. List your response in the “submission” section below.

3.Chinese Violin
Here is an example of the Chinese violin. Many children learn to play instruments and sing at an early age in China. Here is a child playing Rimsky Korsakov’s Flight of the “Bumble Bee”. Sorry it was recorded so loud. In your opinion, what are the benifits to having young children learn music? and why do you think many parents in China have their students learn a musical instrument at a young age? Please list your response in the “submission” section below.

4. Xu Ke Chinese Violin:
Xu Ke is widely considered to be the greatest Erhu player of the 20th and 21st centuries. He has expanded the range of the Erhu from two to more than four octaves and has developed techniques such as double-stopping, artificial harmonics in high position, and graduated prestissimo staccato for Erhu. In defiance of the mechanical limitations of the Erhu, he has also developed a “dual tone melody” capability. In addition to his outstanding interpretation and technique, he is well-known for performing over 100 new works, while adapting classical music to fit within the repertoire of the Erhu. He performs with numerous world orchestras, as well as renowned chamber groups and pianists.
