Case study 1:
You are a social work student on the Rehabilitation Ward of a large public hospital. Your field educator asks you to introduce yourself and undertake a discharge assessment of Mr Giovanni Ramos, a 75 year old man who has been in hospital for the past 2 months following a severe stroke. Mr Ramos’s stroke has left him with a left sided weakness, including a limp and a slurred speech. Throughout his rehabilitation Giovanni has been irritable and uncooperative with the rehabilitation staff, insisting that there is nothing wrong with him and that he should be allowed to go home. He has been particularly critical and abusive towards Mrs Ramos, who has visited him almost daily.
Mr and Mrs Isabel Ramos have 2 adult children, Michael (aged 40) and John (aged 38). Both sons live in interstate and have irregularly visited their father in hospital. The rehabilitation Centre is ready to discharge Giovanni but Isabel has expressed fear to the nursing staff about her ability to look after her husband, in particular due to his aggressive behaviour.
Case Study 2:
Isho is a 15 year old Assyrian refugee who arrived in Australia with his mother 5 years ago from Turkey. Isho and his mother are members of a minority Catholic group who experienced oppression in Iraqi. They sought refuge in Turkey 8 years ago from where they were able to gain asylum in Australia. Isho does not have any other family in Australia, but since arriving he has developed some friends through the local soccer club.
For the past 6 months Isho has been experiencing difficulty concentrating in class. His teachers have noticed that he has become quite isolated, not interacting easily with his peers. Isho is quite musically gifted and his piano teacher has also expressed concern that he is no longer as committed to his piano practice as he used to be.
Today the school counsellor (Geoff) has been informed by Isho’s English teacher (Mrs Bryant) that Isho has been seen hanging around a group of older men before and after School. Mrs Bryant has heard from other teachers that these men are rumoured to be active drug users. You are a student social worker at the School and Geoff has asked you to make contact with Isho. You have sent a note to Isho requesting that he come and see you today during lunch.
Case Study 3:
Myra is a 25 year old woman who has recently experienced sexual harassment in her workplace. Myra works as an accountant in a small business located in a regional town. She moved to the town 2 years ago with her boyfriend Sam. Shortly after moving to the town Myra secured employment in an accountancy business. For the past 6 months Myra has been feeling uncomfortable with a new employee, Connor who has been sending Myra texts during the weekend with uncomfortable and often suggestive messages.
Myra is now on sick leave. She feels stressed and tearful and is not sure that she wants to return to work, however unemployment in the town is quite high and she and Sam are keen to purchase a home. Sam is a self-employed carpenter and has had difficulty securing regular work. Sam is becoming quite annoyed at the situation and has expressed to Myra his disappointment that she has not being able to confront Connor.
Myra has been referred by her GP to the local community health centre for counselling. You are a social work student on placement at the centre. Your supervisor would like you to meet with Myra and identify her needs for counselling.
Case Study 4:
You are a student on placement in a mainstream high school in the city. Your supervisor Mike is the school counsellor. Caroline, a student at the school, is 15 years of age and has Down syndrome. She lives with her father John and younger brother Tom aged 10.
Caroline’s mother died when she was nine years of age. Caroline has attended the high school since she was age 12 and has achieved very well in her studies with the help of Jenny, a committed and skilled teaching assistant.
Over the last year, Caroline’s progress with her studies has slowed down significantly and Jenny has reported that she has trouble concentrating on her work and often becomes angry and tearful in class.
Last week, John contacted the school head teacher and reported that Caroline told him that one of the pupils at the school recently took a photograph of Caroline using their mobile phone and posted it on Facebook (social media) with some disrespectful comments. John also said that Caroline has been isolating herself in her room at home for the past few months and has ceased attending her weekly social activities at the local Church.
The head teacher has referred the matter to Mike. Mike has asked you to meet with Caroline and John at the school.
Case Study 5:
You are a new social worker in the disability services. A case referral regarding an elderly woman, Vera Sturgess, came to your team dealing with intake and assessment from the local hospital. The hospital is still working with Vera as an inpatient and is keen to discharge her. The hospital staff are expecting the disability services team to assist with further assessment of the case from the disabilities angle.
The information contained in the referral is that the woman’s partner passed away a couple of months ago. From the referral it was not clear as to why she was admitted to the hospital in the first instance. The referral is suggesting an assessment around the possibility of previously undiagnosed intellectual disability. The referral mentions that the woman seems confused and experiencing some advanced stages of dementia or this could be related to possibly an undiagnosed intellectual disability.
It appears that the patient does not wish to go home. Apparently two team members from the hospital visited the house and found to their dismay a house infested with mice and rats, and un- flushable toilet; bathtub in the main bathroom full of clothes; unusable, rotting food in the fridge and a disconnected freezer full of food.
You are a student social worker assigned to conduct an initial assessment and make plans for this patient.
