Discuss the cognitive and social processes that lay the foundations for the early stages of language development.
Suggested approach
The main sources of material for this essay are Chapters 1 and 2 of Book 3. You may also wish to draw on other material, perhaps from Book 1, but your main focus should be on the cognitive ‘underpinnings’ for children’s emergent language abilities as well as the social processes that surround and support language development. You might wish to structure your essay by first considering the evidence that infants are building cognitive structures before they are able to speak, maybe even before they have much comprehension of other people’s speech. You could then consider how far these early structures seem to bear a relation to the first words that children speak, going on to explore the social context of language emergence, asking the question of how much influence ‘caregiver talk’ has in the process.
