The goal here is not to write a “report” or a one-sided argument, but a balanced, structured analysis. In addition to choosing a terrorism topic, you also need to decide what type of paper you are writing. You might pursue a broad, theoretical analysis of one of the challenging aspects of the issue, or you might prefer to focus on a particular case or a comparison of two cases. If the latter, you need to connect the case(s) to some of the broader theories/definitions/themes, and clarify why the case(s) you chose are significant. Alternatively, you might pursue a policy-options paper regarding some aspect of terrorism, such as counterterror strategy and tactics. You are being given considerable range in choosing both the type of analysis and the topic, but are strongly encouraged to discuss your paper with me before you write it; I will read and provide feedback on paper outlines, but not paper drafts. The heart of your paper should be its analysis; this is not an opinion-piece or persuasive argument, nor should it be purely descriptive. Pose a thesis question in the paper’s introduction, which must also be the title of your paper. This will set up the topic and make clear what your analysis aims to accomplish. Whether a theory piece, case study, comparative case study, or policy-options analysis, you must offer a structured, organized analysis. You are also expected to find appropriate ways to incorporate some of the material from the assigned readings in the course, in addition to your use of outside sources. All sources must be cited appropriately in the body of the paper and included in your references.
