Annotated Bibliography:

Lectures and readings will introduce students to the topics dealt with in the course. They should
be considered as the starting point to their own independent research and selected reading,
which will aim at the compilation of an annotated bibliography. Each student is asked to complete
a list of 10-12 reputable academic works on a specific aspect or topic of their choice derived from
the subjects dealt with in the course.
Recommendation: 1. The bibliographical sources are to be searched using Library Catalogue and other databases. Preference will be given to printed books or articles, ebooks or ejournal
articles accessible via the appropriate databases. Do not list general reference or non-reputable
websites that you searched online / googled at the last minute without critically assessing their
content. Present a variety of sources found through the Library system; do not repeat the same
annotation structure for each entry.
Nota Bene: Material coming from websites or media of reputable research institutions and centres
may be accepted when complementing the published sources selected.
Source selection: Once a student has conducted a good overview of a particular literature and the
major questions at the centre of the researchers’ discussion, (s)he’ll come to appreciate one
aspect of the current research that interests her/him the most. (S)he will select the works (s)he
wishes to include in an annotated bibliography, based on their relevance in the study of a more
specific issue that has attracted the student’s interest and motivation to read further. The sources
should be about 10-12 or enough to complete two to three pages with annotations.
Annotations: The annotated bibliography is compiled listing the sources selected in alphabetical
order according to the MLA style. The information on the published work is followed by a
paragraph that summarizes the main argument and information provided in the work. Basically, it
should tell someone who has no knowledge of the publication what it is about and the who, when,
and how. Only a few works selected should be articles with abstracts included in their original publication. Abstracts in academic journals offer a good example of what an annotation could be
