Source Requirements
Since these papers will all include information outside of class lecture, regardless of which selection you have chosen, you will need to back up any information with credible sources. You must use reliable sources found in newspapers, journals or national magazines that specialize in your topic. Please try not to use Internet sources, but if you must, judge Internet sources critically, since we will be grading you on your choice of sources.
For Choice A: Your sources should be from newspapers and music periodicals of the time period in which you are discussing (both 1950s/60s and today) – which specifically discuss your artist/group and song choices. You should be looking critically at the lyrics of the song and link these lyrics to the protest they are discussing. You should also focus your sources on reliable discussions of the Civil Rights Movement and the current protest you are discussing.
For Choice B: Your sources should be from newspapers and film periodicals of the time period in which you are discussing – which specifically discuss your film – as well as more recent periodicals that discuss your films. You should choose a theme for your films (something they have in common), as well as how they portray aspects of the African Americans historical experience. You should be looking critically at what that the films are about, who directs, produces and stars in the films, how well it was received by the larger viewing audience (white and black), as well as a discussion in how they fit our class. Please remember you must compare your films with the films watched for class.
Choice C: Your sources should be from newspapers and book periodicals of the time period in which your novel (play, non-fiction) are discussing – which specifically discuss your book and the author – as well as more recent periodicals that discuss your book/author. You will need to argue how your choice best portrays the African Americans experience. You should be looking critically at what that your book is about, who wrote it, who published it, how well it was received by the larger reading audience, as well as a discussion in how it fits our class discussion.
