Aesthetic Expressions

Essay writing

1. Identify a theme and choose 3 artworks which address the theme. Each piece of art chosen should be from a different genre (painting,

music, sculpture etc).

2. Research your theme and the theories related with reference to aesthetic context. The books listed on the syllabus is a good place to

start.

3. Research the factors related to other disciplines which impact on the 3 works of art chosen so that you can recreate the context. Aspects

you should consider are:
a. Historical context
b. Technological advances of the time
c. Political context
d. Economic context
e. Sociological context

4. Decide what the intentions of the creators were (what message they wanted to give and to whom) and what impact the pieces of art had on

the intended public. Take into consideration the genre of your chosen artworks.

5. Draw conclusions from your research and formulate your hypothesis statement. Your essay will hang on this statement so take time to decide

on it.

6. Plan your essay

a. Introduction. (Specify why you chose the subject and what you want to show/prove in your essay). This paragraph will include your

hypothesis statement.
b. Body of your essay. You may put headings and sub-headings here to help the reader. The structure of the main body of the essay will depend

on your subject.
c. Conclusion (summarise your main points and what you have proved/shown in your essay. Refer to your introduction)
d. Consider your word count of 2500 words.
e. Include correct references in APA (or Harvard) format showing your background reading – Remember that only works you cite from should be

included on your reference list of your final essay.
