Task Provide a critical analysis of a single example of photojournalism that draws on Donna Schwartz’s article “To Tell the Truth: Codes of Objectivity in Photojournalism”, available on Blackboard, and the theoretical framework

of organizational analysis as discussed in Critical Media Studies. The assignment asks you to make an analytic, critical argumentative claim about the image you select that answers the question, “Drawing on the codes of

objectivity in photojournalism, as discussed by Schwartz, how does the photograph present reality?” Provide close and detailed analysis of the image in your explanation. Be sure to explain what’s at stake in your analysis. Yes, the

image follows the rule of thirds, but “so what?” What does your chosen image(s) say about, for example, journalism, beats, objectivity, informational bias, or how the organization of media and the profession of photojournalism

affect what is presented and how it is presented? Assignment Details Choose one and only one example of photojournalism (i.e. a single image). The image you choose may be from a news magazine or a daily newspaper (the

Toronto Star is available on campus for free), an online news website such as the CBC, Globe and Mail or other site, or an image by a photojournalist that you find through an image search. You need to document the source of

your image in your Works Cited page. You can also include a copy of the image in your paper, as shown in the template provided. The exact source of your image is up to you, but you must choose an example of published

photojournalism (including online publication from reputable and recognizable sources). Videos, advertising, fashion images, art photographs, and personal photographs are not acceptable. If you do not analyze an example of

photojournalism, you will be docked 50 points.

Length 1200 words, which is approximately 3 pages. Papers more than or less than 10% of this amount (i.e. 1, 080 or 1,320 words) will be docked 20 points. Please adhere to word count limitation. Format All papers must be in

MLA format and include a Works Cited page that lists our textbook, Swartz’s article, and the source of your image. Your paper should have its own title. Do not assume that your readers are in this classroom. Write your paper

for a larger audience who is not familiar with either this assignment or Swartz’s essay. Your paper should begin with an introduction that provides the context of your analysis. Don’t provide long quotations from Swartz or the

textbook, but be willing to explain/summarize ideas as necessary so that your readers (who are NOT members of this class) will be able to understand your analysis. You are not allowed to do additional research or quote from

additional sources. You will be provided a template for formatting your paper. Papers that do not precisely follow this format will be docked 20 points. Cut and paste papers or papers with passages found in online sources are not

acceptable. Cut and paste work will be docked 100 points.
