Aim: To deepen reflective and analytical skills in relation to evaluation of training sessions.

Description: Provide an analysis of your team training session, and recommendations for future training sessions and your own personal development in relation to teamwork.

This is an individual piece. You are expected to use academic references to support your analysis and recommendations. Although this will incorporate personal reflections, this assignment is to be written as an academically focussed, reflective essay (examples of style follow on next page).

Structure of assignment:

1) Short introduction that outlines the key ideas and argument

2) Body that contains a series of paragraphs (see below for examples of writing a reflective, academic essay). Try to begin each paragraph with a topic sentence and finish with a link to the next paragraph. This assignment must:

a) analyse the “data” (including formal evaluations of training session; self-assessment tools and forms from Teamwork Skills Toolkit; your own observations and reflections of your teamwork, personal contributions to the training session; the debrief), with meaningful links to the literature, and

b) Based on the analysis, make specific recommendations about:
– improving training sessions and
– your own personal development in terms of your own teamwork skills

3) Conclusion that sums up the assignment, without introducing new ideas.

Attach as an appendix that shows a:

summary of the results (both qualitative and quantitative) of your evaluation sheets from the training session and
summary of results of your self-assessments on your team work skills (forms from
Teamwork Skills Toolkit noted above and your debrief)

Referencing: You must use at least ten academic references in a meaningful way. While you can use the text, other books, chapters and practitioner literature, you must include at least seven journal articles (peer-reviewed scholarly publications). If you use a website then it must be a valid academic or practitioner website. Please use either APA or Harvard referencing styles. It is recommended that you use the library/GBS Resource Bank referencing tools to ensure your referencing is correct at all times.

This assignment is both personally reflective and academically focussed, so it is very important to clearly show where your ideas are coming from (e.g. academic style if from the literature; first person to describe your own reflections).

Examples of the writing style:

On reflection, I think the activity was too ambitious for the time available. When we introduced the activity, I observed that some participants looked confused and asked for additional explanation. Only 40% of participants “strongly agreed” that the activity had been useful to their learning. The tutor’s feedback indicated that the activity seemed complex and long. My recommendation is for teams to fully practice the session, including asking for volunteers to try out the activity. Research by M (2014) accords with this recommendation in that………….

Taking Kolb’s Experiential Learning Cycle (ref) into account, the length of the activity meant that reflection phase had to be shortened. Reflection should be a major part of the experiential learning cycle as participants need sufficient time to react to and process their learning….. (Y, 2014).

I have two major recommendations for my own teamwork development. Firstly, as the results of my self-assessment form indicate, I could be more assertive in explaining my thinking to the team. Research on teamwork by X (2014) shows that…….. I think I should try and summarise points via a diagram. For example, in regard to……, an example of what I could do and say differently is: “…….”.
