Rubric for COMM 1301 Term Papers

As you prepare your term papers, remember that they are like any other assignment in my class.  You do not start with a perfect grade and lose points as you commit errors; you start with a zero and gain points as your paper adds progressively more value to the scholarly conversation on communication theory.  The following is not an inclusive list of everything which will impact your final grade.  However, it is a very good guide which I strongly encourage you to use as a reference.

Remember also that your paper must be turned in on time, and that is an absolute.  These standards apply to any papers properly submitted in Blackboard by the end of week 7. Papers submitted through any other route will not be graded, and papers received even a second late will not be graded.  Papers not graded will result in a grade of zero.

General Standards for the Paper
1)    All page limits are double spaced in Times New Roman 12 point font with 1” margins on all sides.
2)    All page limits refer to actual text. References, graphics, title pages, headers, and other material are excluded from these limits.
3)    Upper page limits are as important as lower page limits.
4)    You are required to write your paper according to the most recent publication manual of the American Psychological Association.

A Paper Which Receives an “F” or a “No Credit” Grade Will:
1)    Fall in some aspect short of the standards for a D paper.
2)    Have serious errors in grammar, spelling, or organization which inhibit my ability to understand the argument being made in the paper.

A Paper Which Receives a “D” Grade Will:
1)    Be at least 5 pages long.
2)    Be no longer than 8 pages.
3)    Clearly and accurately describe some communication problem or issue.
4)    Be free of a substantial number of serious errors in grammar or style.
5)    Properly cite at least 5 sources.

A Paper Which Receives a “C” Grade Will:
1)    Meet all standards of a D paper.
2)    Have no more than 5 errors in grammar and/or style.
3)    Cite at least 5 sources which are from academic journals or scholarly books.
4)    Be well organized, having at a minimum:
A)    A thesis statement.
B)    An introduction.
C)    A conclusion.
5)    Apply at least one theory of communication to the identified problem. Applying the theory must result in a better understanding of the problem.

A Paper Which Receives a “B” Grade Will:
1)    Meet all standards for a C paper.
2)    Have no more than 3 errors in grammar and/or style.
3)    Cite at least 8 sources which are from academic journals or scholarly books.
4)    Have internal sub-headings every few pages in the body of the paper which add clarity and show organization.
5)    Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of a theory of communication in responding to the problem you have identified.

A Paper Which Receives an “A” Grade Will:
1)    Meet all standards for a B paper.
2)    Have no more than 1 error in any element of grammar or style.
3)    Have organization which is perfectly clear and makes immediate sense to me as the reader.
4)    Cite and include in the bibliography at least 10 sources which are from academic journals or scholarly books.
5)    Add to the understanding of a theory of communication sufficiently well that I believe it should be submitted as a student paper to a scholarly conference in communication.
