High School Superlatives (Found on Course Materials Page)
Overview If an author does his or her job well, the characters in the short story should feel realistic, as if you might meet that person in real life. It should seem as if the character has a life outside of the short story. This assignment asks you to do just that: imagine the life of the character outside the short story. Specifically, you will be thinking about high school superlatives. These are those pages in the yearbook that declare that a person is “Most Popular,” or “Most Likely to Succeed.” You will be the person compiling the yearbook and you will be thinking about all of the characters in the stories that you read. Since so many of your short stories deal with strong and sensitive material, these superlatives are not as light as some of the ones that you might see in an actual yearbook.
Directions 1. Open up the Document “High School Superlatives” on the course materials page.
2. Using your Short Stories, assign one character from one of the short stories that we read in week 2 for each category. Below your selection, you will write a short paragraph that would appear in the yearbook explaining the choice.
EXAMPLE:
Most Serious: Lieutenant Jimmy Cross: The Things They Carried
The Lieutenant has experienced much in his time in the was that has led him to lead such a serious life. He has been close to death and blames himself for it. As a result, he has been given the “most serious” superlative.
