Part 2 – Before studying E100, I was not aware of theorists Piaget and Vygotsky and their theories regarding child development. Whilst completing the table in part 1 and reading more about child development, it has been an eye opener as to how much these theories reflect my practice.
I work with children aged 4-5 years which falls under the Pre-Operational stage in Piagets theory. During this stage, which often lasts from ages two through to seven, Piaget mentioned that children begin to use combinations or sequences of actions that can be carried out symbolically as an abstract mathematical principle (addition). (Piaget, Book1, Practitioners and children). I can relate this to one of the curriculum targets at my primary school which is addition (finding the total of two groups) for children in the Reception class.
