In the UK there is an estimated six million carers who care for a relative but are unpaid for it. A carer is defined by the government as someone who looks after a friend, relative or a neighbour who needs support because of sickness, age or disability chapter 1. A carer is not to be mistaken as a care worker who is a person who is paid for the care they give as this is their job. In this essay I will be using the case of Ann whom we meet in Chapter 1. Ann and her family moved in with her mother and step father to save money to buy their own house. Anns stepfather Angus has Parkinsons disease and Anns mother cared for him until she died. This is when Ann took over looking after Angus. She provides round the clock care with a little help from her husband and teenage daughter.
