Part B – The social model of disability is the theory that argues that people can be disabled by their environment. The model was devised by academics each of whom had disabilities, and were left concerned that the everyday barriers that faced them in everyday life restricted them from participating in society as a whole. The social model of disability calls for equality and solutions to these disadvantages that are experienced on a daily basis by disabled people. There are three main barriers concerned within the model; environmental concerning the layout and design of buildings and communities, attitudinal which focuses on the views of those without disabilities and their assumptions on the capabilities of those with disabilities, and structural concerning different cultures, ideas and legal and moral frameworks that shape experiences for those with disabilities.
