Analyze and Interpret a poem
Choose any poem by Sidney, Shakespeare, Spencer, or Donne from your textbook other than the ones read for class. Then, analyze and interpret it, taking into account the poet’s use of the sonnet form (i.e., how line division and rhyme are used to shape meaning) and the way the poet plays with sonnet convention (e.g., conventional use of the form as a love poem), as well as imagery and theme. (Length 3-5 typed pages) If you use internet sources, you MUST document AND include a copy of the source attached to your paper.

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
When I consider everything that grows
Holds in perfection but a little moment,
That this huge stage presentethnought but shows
Whereon the stars in secret influence comment;
When I perceive that men as plants increase,
Cheered and check’d even by the selfsame sky,
Vaunt in their youthful sap, at height decrease,
And wear their brave state out of memory;
Then the conceit of this inconstant stay
Sets you most rich in youth before my sight,
Where wasteful Time debateth with Decay
To change your day of youth to sullied night;
And all in war with Time for love of you,
As he takes from you, I engraft you new.
