Witchcraft in Colonial New England

Your assignment is to write a critical comparison of Paul Boyer and Stephan Nissenbaum’sSalem Possessed and Mary Beth Norton’s In the Devil’s Snare. I suggest beginning your paper with Salem Possessed because it was published first. In the Devil’s Snare is in part a response to the earlier work. Your paper should address the proverbial “intelligent but uninformed reader” so it is important to begin with a description of the books and their arguments. However, your analysis of the books is the most important part of the paper.Make sure that you refer your reader to specific portions of each book (and footnote the relevant pages).

Your paper should include:
1. a brief description of Salem Possessed and the sources on which it is based
2. a synopsis of the Boyer and Nissenbaum’s argument
3. a brief description of In the Devil’s Snare and the sources on which it is based
4. a synopsis of Norton’s argument
5. *a comparison of the two books and your analysis explaining which you find more convincing*

Yourpaper should be 4-5 pages in length. It should be double-spaced, using 12 point Times New Roman font, and have one inch margins. It should employ Chicago Manual of Style footnotes (see Turabian for format). Please number your pages. Please proofread your paper. You may make use of any primary sources from the syllabus if you wish, but you should not refer to any sources from outside of the course. You do not need a bibliography or works cited page. The assignment is due in class on Oct 15.

For those of you who have not mastered footnoting, this is the time! Kate Turabian’sA Manual for Writers can guide you through almost any footnoting dilemma (as well as answer questions about spelling, punctuation and grammar)! See pp. 123-127 for everything you need to know in order to correctly format the footnotes for a published book with a single author. Footnotes are reference notes as opposed to bibliographic notes. You do not need a bibliography for this paper; therefore, you do not need bibliographic notes for this paper.

Remember the three circumstances in which you should use footnotes.
1. when you quote directly from a source
2. when you refer to a specific passage in a source or use a fact which is not common knowledge
3. when you use someone else’s argument or idea
