Value is the required or needed performance at minimum cost. Now, what is the needed performance? Needed performance is what the customer expects. If it is less than the desired performance, one should focus on eliminating the waste caused due to overdesign, such as costly material, high factor of safety in design, etc. Value in general is the ratio of function and cost.
