What explains the “democratic peace”?

Some crucial things to remember:
1. You must answer the precise question set. Do not alter the question. Do not interpret it as an invitation to discuss the topic in general. Provide a clear answer to the question and justify it: explain, by reference to the literature and to empirical data, why that is your answer.
2. Make sure that in answering the question you advance an argument. Your job is to convince me to accept your answer to the question. Bear in mind, however, that these types of questions do not have absolutely “right” answers: the marking criteria rewards you for advancing an argument, quite independently of whether I agree with it.
3. Your answer and argument should draw on and engage with at least some of the literature on the reading list for the relevant topic. You are very welcome to go beyond what is listed on the reading list, but you should explain why you agree/disagree with particular arguments advanced in the literature.
4. Make sure you employ a clear and consistent form of referencing. References to literature and arguments in essays should either carry an in-text citation (Humphreys 2015) or be fully referenced in a footnote. Whichever model you choose, you must provide a bibliography, in alphabetical order, containing all bibliographic information. You must reference whatever sources you draw on, wherever you find them (including webpages). Failure to provide full references for sources you draw on may constitute plagiarism and result in an academic misconduct hearing.
