The article describes the use of Qualitative research methods, gathering information in the form of interviews and conversation, rather than Quantitative research, using more structured, often numeric data. Cooper wanted to record in-depth interviews with counsellors who gave rich and descriptive contributions, describing times when they had engaged with their clients at a relational depth. There was a phenomenological approach to the study, with four participants, experienced counsellors who had previously volunteered to take part in the research, being asked to think, ..about times when they felt they had engaged with the client at a high level of relational depth.
