Instructions: Applying critical methodology, write an essay analyzing a work of fiction, a play, two or more poems– that has been
assigned in the course. Consider the literary work(s) as a reflection of American history and culture and as an influence on
American history and culture.
In your analysis, consider one of the following topics: 1) The American Dream; 2) War; 3) Psychological Meltdown (fear, paranoia,
despair); 4) Rebellion and Counterculture. Relate your essay to the biographical, historical and cultural milieu of the writer.
Include quotations from the primary texts (fiction, nonfiction, drama or poems) to illustrate your thesis and the main points of
your argument (analysis and/or comparison/contrast).
Length: 1500 to 2000 words (six to eight pages, double spaced, and typed in Times New Roman 12-point font).
Audience: Assume that your reader has read the literary work about which you are writing (do not summarize the content); assume
that your reader has done no research on the biographical, historical, or cultural context of the work and has limited knowledge of
the content you are presenting.
Source Requirement: In addition to the literary work you are analyzing, incorporate three to five outside sources appropriate for
use in an academic essay. Include an annotated bibliography of at least three credible scholarly sources (academic journal articles
or book chapters) from the UMUC library; include an annotated list of at least two Web resources, including illustrations, if used.
If you begin your online search using Wikipedia, try to obtain the original source from the Wikipedia bibliography; quote from and
cite that source; Wikipedia itself is not an acceptable cited source for an academic paper.
Style: Apply MLA (Modern Language Association) Style Guidelines. Consult the Effective Writing Center and the UMUC Library for
guidance and assistance. MLA Style is required.
