“Special Educational Needs in Early Childhood Early Identification: implications for the child, the family and society.”

This essay will detail the historical background to how Special Educational Needs (S.E.N.) has evolved and discuss what inclusion means.  In particular it will seek to address the effects of early identification of SEN, focusing particularly on consequences for the child, the family and wider society.  Discussion will also take place evaluating current legislation and how this applies to a variety of disabilities.  Reference will also be made to personal practice.

In terms of the treatment of children with learning difficulties, society has come along way.  These children were segregated and sent away to institutions at the start of the twentieth century.  Attitudes changed and integration was considered a step forward.  Integration however, required the child to fit in if they were to remain in mainstream education.  Only in recent years has the philosophy of an …(short extract)
