DISCUSSION BOARD FORUMS INSTRUCTIONS

Step 1:
Read the assigned readings for each forum.As you read, look for several short and insightful quotes.A “short” quote is 1–2 sentences.An “insightful” quote is a statement that is short, but gives a powerful and helpful message about:

• Human nature,
• The moral struggles humans often face,
• Human relationships,
• A paradox about life, or
• An ideal which drives humans to work, dream, and persevere.

Step 2:
Select a single quote to explain to other classmates.Insightful quotes must come from the “primary” sources in the reading lists. For example, in Discussion Board Forum 1, you might select quotes directly from Ovid’s Metamorphoses. Do not quote the introductory material or notes found in the textbookaboutMetamorphoses. Do not use a quote that others have already explained (that is why you mustpick several quotes).Ideally, you willpick an insightful quote that no else in the course has submitted on the forum.

Step 3:
Write a 250–300-word explanation of (1) what the quote meant to the original readers of the text and (2) what it means to people today.This brief explanation mustbe written and rewritten until it is clear and easy for others to understand on the first reading.If, while writing your explanation, you discover that someone else has just submitted the same quote, it is your responsibility to make sure your explanation is very different from what other students have observed about the quote.If identical or near-identicalthreads are submitted, the student of the original submission will get full credit and the student who submitted later may suffer penalties for plagiarism.

Step 4:
Submit your insightful quote to the forum on or before the specified due date and time.

Step 5:
Reply to 2 classmates’ threads in 75–100 words each.Keep in mind that one of the goals of the discussion board posts is to help you prepare for the quizzes at the end of the modules/weeks. When you read a post by one of the other students, you might gain new insight into the meaning of the reading assignments (this will help you with the upcoming quiz).Your reply might be an explanation of why the other student’s ideas helped you (and why those ideas might help others). Perhaps you overlooked something in the readings, or the post gave you new connections between parts of the reading assignment.
A second goal of the discussion board posts is to spark ideas for the mid-course essay and the final research paper.When you read a post by another student, you might discover an idea to use in one of your papers.Your reply would be a good place to start developing and testing that idea, both for your own sake (to help you start your paper projects) and for others (to help them imagine what they could write about).
Submit your threads for Discussion Board Forums 1, 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Thursday of the assigned modules/weeks. Submit your replies by 11:59 p.m. (ET) on Monday of the same modules/weeks.
