SNAPSHOT OF A DEADLY DROUGHT
? Nearly 60 per cent of the state is in drought, an area of about 41 million hectares
? 2014 is on track to be one of the hottest years on record
? Rainfall in October was below average for 88 per cent of
NSW
? 55 per cent of farms in northern NSW have recorded
negative cash incomes in 2013/14
? This is expected to rise to more than 60 per cent in 2014-15
? Average farm business debt increased by 12 per cent in
northwest NSW in 2013-14
? There is a 70 per cent chance that El Nino will be declared
in coming months, suggesting the drought will get much worse
