In Aaron Friedberg’s book, A Contest for Supremacy, the author assesses seven distinct factors that experts have identified as “important in shaping the evolution of Sino-American relations.” Two of these factors, “narrowing gap in national power” and “differences in ideologies and political structure” promote more intensive competition between China and the US, according to the author. The remaining five factors, “economic interdependence, evolution toward liberal democracy, integration into international institutions, common threats, existence of nuclear weapons” will promote peace and cooperation, according to the author (pp. 37-38).

Your assignment is first to summarize the author’s views on these seven factors and to evaluate his conclusions. Which of these seven factors do you consider most important for shaping the future of Sino-American relations? In your opinion, are there other important factors that will shape Sino-American relations?
