(Research Essay): CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS

YOUR TASK: you are to write a ten- to eleven-page thesis-driven, argumentative essay, with a scholarly component, in which you develop a complex argument around your complete analysis of one of the topics and its thesis questionslisted on page two of this prompt. Your analysis of the chosen topic should concentrate primarily on present-daysociety here in the United States. The following demands, listed below, are required for a successful Major Essay #2:
• To add credibility to your evidence produced in support of your argument regarding your chosen topic, you must frequently and relevantly incorporate the ideas from SIXpre-approvedscholarlysources to bolster your analysis and to verify your support. These sources must provide at least 90% of all analysis.
• To add further credibility to your supporting evidence, in one full paragraphyou must acknowledge a counter-argument (a position in opposition to your own) and provide a rebuttal to this counter-argument that provides credible additional support to your argument announced in your thesis.
• You must also choose at least two essays from the Required Readings list (see below), from which you willanalyze and thoroughly draw connections of the similar or contrasting experiences, ideas, or philosophies expressed in theseessays to your chosen topic. Please note that your choice of essays is limited to only the essays listed in the Required Readings section below only.
• You have the option to choose additional sources. However, these sources cannot exceed 10% of the total analysis in your essay. No instructor approval will be necessary for these additional sources.

CRITERIA FOR GRADING: Because this essay contains a scholarly component and will involve more complex material and analysis, a more stringent criteria for grading this assignment will be assessed fromthe following:
• The relevancy, accuracy,and utilization of your six pre-approved scholarly sources,and the ideas and analyses they employ, that you use to verify the terms of your stated argument. Using each scholarly source only once in your essay is not an efficient use of a scholarly source;
• The ability to remain focused on your chosen topic and its thesis questions;
• The success of the analytical connections that you discover from at least two of the six essays, taken from 50 Essays, listed in the Required Readings below;
• The accuracy, validity, and fairness of your counter-argument/rebuttal, asexpressed in one paragraph;
• The employment of well-polished, appropriate, and proficient grammar and its usage;
• The adherence to proper MLA format and citation rules, as outlined on pages 479-532 of Hacker’s Rules for WritersAND as outlined in the Expectations/Format section below (see items #2 & #3);
• The ability to demonstrate purpose, to know audience, to offer a well-organized presentation of evidence, and to utilize an effective academic tone that effectively communicates ideas with precision.

REQUIRED READINGS: For a good understanding of culture’s influence upon society, the following essays from 50 Essays―A Portable Anthology, edited by Samuel Cohen, are mandatory reading and the schedule for these readings appear in the Class Schedule. Of the essay choices below, you must use at least two of these six essays, from which you discover a logical connection and from which you will provide additional verification for your support. Take note how these authors use example, classification, comparison and contrast, or cause and effect to present their views and arguments. Please do not deviate from the following six readings: “Turkeys in the Kitchen,” by Barry (72); “Just Walk on By: Black Men and Public Space,” by Staples (394); “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” by Carr (91); “Shooting an Elephant,” by Orwell (295); “A Woman’s Beauty—Put-Down or Power Source,” by Sontag (386); “Civil Disobedience,” by Thoreau (424).Please note that these essays are not scholarly essays and cannot be used as such.

EXPECTATIONS, FORMAT GUIDELINES, AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
1. You are expected to utilize all steps of the Writing Process, with the goal in mind of producing an essay as coherent and unified as possible.
2. MLA format is required. See pages 479-532in Hacker’s Rules for Writersfor how to cite both in-text and Works Cited page citations and for viewing a sample MLA-formatted research essay.
3. Give your essay a creative title that reflects the main idea(s) stated in your thesis.
4. Rough Draft of at least five (5) pages on 4/26/2016.
5. An attached Research and Topics Supplement (RATS)is included with this prompt. Students must be complete their RATS prior to getting approval for each source. And I must approve all sourcesby 4/28. The guidelines for submission are outlined on the RATS.
6. As noted in the RATS guidelines (#3), five of your six scholarly sources must be scholarly articles from CSUSM’s library’s research database. Only one of your sources can be taken from a book, the exception being an anthology of related essays on a common subject matter.
