Readings from Section One of “God or Blind Nature? Philosophers Debate the Evidence” on infidels.org. Andrew Melnyk’s “A Case for Physicalism about the Human Mind”, “Physicalism and the First-Person Point of View”, and “Naturalism, Free Choices, and Conscious Experiences”. Goetz and Taliferro’s “Objections to Melnyk’s Case for Physicalism”, “An Argument from Consciousness and Free Will”, and “Reply to Melnyk’s Objections”.
The essays should be analytical and persuasive rather than merely expository. In each essay you should do the following:
1) Select a claim made by the author(s).
2) State that claim clearly and fairly and cite the reasons given by the author(s) for that claim.
3) Clearly state your position on that claim (e.g. reject, approve, partially reject, or partially approve).
4) Provide rational argument in support of your position.
In other words, the essay will give you an opportunity to join the debate.
